Looking for a new horror movie? It can be pretty difficult at times. Like any other genre, sequels and remakes can overwhelm at the multiplexes. Thankfully, adventurous souls now have a new outlet to discover original films and talent. A new late night film series championing small, independent fright flicks continues this Friday and Saturday at the Digital Gym with “Gut”.

The story follows childhood friends and horror film fans Tom (Jason Vail) and Dan (Nicholas Wilder). Now working an office job with a wife and kids, Tom can’t help but feel his life is slipping away. Dan is seemingly in even worse shape, a lonely bachelor clinging to his best friend. After Dan invites Tom over to check out a mysterious video that may be a snuff film, events take a turn for the worse. Tom slowly begins to experience bizarre visions and violent thoughts, and soon both the men’s lives spiral downwards.

A film made independently on a shoe-string budget that can utilize only a few locations will always have limitations. However, hardcore fans of do-it-yourself, low-budget horror should find something to admire. The success of psychological horror flicks always rest on the performances of the lead actors and the attempt made by the fresh faced cast is admirable. It’s appropriately grim, features some disturbing imagery and the photography is crisp.

“Gut” isn’t for the masses, but it won awards in the categories of Best Feature and Make-Up Effects at last year’s New York City Horror Film Festival. If it sounds like something that might be up your alley and you’re keen on supporting homemade, micro-budgeted independent films, it may be worth checking out. The film will be screening both nights at 10pm.
